By default, footnotes are wrote down via a number and an explanation at the bottom of a page.
That's how books have been doing, and Web designers copied this without thinking of the user experience.
This changed recently, when Wikipedia changed the way it references its footnotes, showing them inside a popup window, right next to the reference itself.
Bigfoot works the same way, showing footnotes right where the referral annotation is, via a popup tooltip.
An additional mode is packed as well, showing a popup toolbar at the bottom of the page when the reference is accessed.
